You probably know that there is only one place in the world where you can achieve that. When you speak to us, you will realise that your dream is closer than you thought.
The length of your itinerary for a birding trip in Cuba depends mainly on the species you want to see. If this is your first trip to the island and you also want to see a bit of the culture as well as the birds, you may be happy to spend your time between Pinar del Rio, La Habana and Cienaga de Zapata. This can be from 11 to 14 days trip.
We use specialised local guides that know well where the birds are. This will give you the best chance to see the Bee Hummingbird (smallest bird in the world) and many of the most elusive of the Cuban endemics such as the Cuban Solitaire, the Pigmy Owl, Cuban Parrot, Parakeets, Fernandina’s Flicker, Cuban Green Woodpecker and many other of the 22 species of birds endemic to Cuba. As well as seeing many more of the 380 species recorded for the island, many of which come during the winter to the salt marches of Las Salinas. Other range restricted species such as Giant Kingbird and Cuban Palm Crow, require you to venture further East to Cayo Coco and Camaguey. But it all depends on what is on your wish list.
We have the distinctive advantage of having in our team a Cuban biologist that worked for more than a decade in Cienaga de Zapata and designing birdwatching tours in Cuba. She has professional knowledge of the biodiversity of the Island and the needed local knowledge to design your trip as you want it; off the beaten track, staying with locals in “casas particulares” (Cuban version of B&B), or using the most appropriate hotels for this type of trip.
If you have time to visit only one location in Cuba for birding. This has to be Cienaga de Zapata. The different vegetation types in the area, provide habitat to as many as 18 of the 22 Cuban endemic birds and as many as 175 species of birds in total.
