Cerrado Restoration in Chapada dos Veadeiros and Brasilia

////Cerrado Restoration in Chapada dos Veadeiros and Brasilia

Restoration of the Cerrado Ecosystem in Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park.

Working in an award winning habitat restoration project, helping restore the Cerrado (Brazilian Savana).

The Cerrado or Brazilian Savana is also known as the water cradle as it hosts water springs of the main river basins of Brazil, that drain to other water catchments such as the Amazon, the Parana, Tocantis and São Francisco rivers.

The National Park Chapada dos Veadeiros was created in 1961 and extended in 2017, protecting an area of 240 m hectares of high Cerrado. It is located in the heart of Brazil 250 km North of Brazilia

The park protects several habitat types of the Cerrado Ecosystem and it is crossed by almost 500 springs and water courses with waterfalls. Running over rocks that are more than one billion years old and landscapes of rare beauty, with features that change throughout the year. Also conserved, are the areas of old quartz mining, that existed prior to the creation of the Nationl Park, which are important part of the local history.

The Park was declared a World Natural Heritage Site in 2001 and comprises the core area of the Cerrado Biosphere Reserve, both titles conferred by UNESCO.

The region has two seasons: Dry season July- October with high temperatures during the day and cool during night and early mornings. The dry season can have cooler days due to polar weather fronts coming from the South.

It is important to have insect repellent and sun cream. Cloths should be of light materials preferably that can dry quickly. For field work you should bring long sleeves, long trousers and boots.

This is a tourism area with several rivers and attractions for recreation, that you will be able to enjoy in your fee time.

The project takes place for one week in Brasilia, at the Brasilia National Park office, where they do some of the office based work on the habitat restoration research and the rest of the time you will be working with the field at the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, located 3 hours, by coach journey, from Brasilia.

The main objective of this project is to recover the natural ecological processes of the Cerrado and to provide adequate protection of the soil and water resources.

The project has as secondary objective, but extremely important, the training and involvement of local populations in the conservation actions promoted by the Park. Other secondary objectives are: encouraging the recovery of degraded areas outside the protected area, and encouraging the change of production modes towards activities that offer less environmental impact.
