Habitat restoration became “a big thing” in nature conservation since the beginning of the new millennium, due to increased awareness of nature degradation and human reliance on natural services. This triggered the work and research related to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, that kicked started in 2001. This process involved habitat-based research to ascertain the condition of the different ecosystems and its relation to human welbeing, which also shaped the Ecosystem Services Concept. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment was finally published in 2005. And with this, the idea that we must restore habitats in order to maintain the natural services that determine human webeing, was finally institutionalised. As a result, habitat restoration has become integrating part of land management in most rural areas, to maintain the benefits they provide to human life and biodiversity.
Our habitat restoration projects do exactly that. Green Planet Ventures supports the field work required to restore or enhance ecological services (human benefits) in areas where forest have been degraded. The benefits of healthy forests are many: water provision, air purification, climate regulation, food provision and recreation, just to name a few. And maintaining those is as important as the air we breathe, quite literally. So, YOUR work in one of our forest restoration projects will be THAT important. In complete honesty, this is real hard work. It involves collecting seeds from natural forests and sawing those in the area to be restored, and later maintaining the new growth and or planting small plants. Our partners are always busy with their forests restoration projects and as they know that it is real hard work they also give you a mixture of work and recreational activities so you can help us out, learn a lot and relax, all at the same time. Come and help! What are you wanting for?
