Brazil is a vast country with a total surface of more than 8.5 million square kilometres. It is the 5th biggest country in the world, occupying almost half (47%) of the South American continent, limited by only one ocean: The Atlantic. It has a complex topography and one of the longest river systems in the world with eight water catchments, of which the most notorious is the Amazon River basin. These, coupled with the fact that the country is extended over several latitudes with different climatic conditions: equatorial, tropical, subtropical and temperate, create a complex array of ecosystems and diverse life forms, making of Brazil the most biodiverse country on earth.

Its spread over several latitudes also makes the climate of the different regions very different. Whereas in the North, near the equator, you can experience relatively stable temperature ranging between 22-26 C throughout the year. In the Southern-most states, located in the temperate zone, temperatures can reach as low as 5 C degrees in the winter (June to September) seeing even snow at high altitudes; or experience as high as 40 C in arid areas during the summer.
